Following Guirong Wei’s appearance in Netflix’s Chef’s Table: Noodles, the South China Morning Post looked more closely at the journey behind her growing international recognition and the ambition that has shaped more than 25 years of her career.
Born in Shaanxi and fascinated by noodles from an early age, Guirong built her career around the food traditions of her home region. By 2024, that journey had grown into a group of London restaurants including Xi’an Impression, Master Wei and Dream Xi’an, each giving her another platform to introduce the flavours and craftsmanship of Shaanxi cuisine to a wider audience.
The feature reflects a goal that remains central to Guirong’s work: making the noodles and food culture of Xi’an more widely understood beyond China. Her appearance on Chef’s Table brought that ambition to an international audience, while the SCMP profile placed it within the longer story of a chef who has spent decades perfecting her craft and sharing the food of her hometown.
